Improving Literacy and Numeracy  

Elementary School Students

Market Day Bilingual is a work program owned by one of the KM 5 students of the Fine Arts Education study program, State University of Malang. Market Day Bilingual is carried out by all students in grades IV, V and VI, where the targets are students in grades I, II, and III. This work program was carried out on June 5, 2023.  The purpose of holding this work program is to develop the talents that exist in students, especially in the field of entrepreneurship. In addition, this Bilingual Market Day is also one of the media for introducing economic activities to students. This is intended with the aim that students gain an understanding of how to be a good entrepreneur and how to reduce gaps in the economic sector. This activity was held in the schoolyard of SDN SATAK 1 (A Yani 1 Satak Kec.Puncu Jatim, Ayani, Satak, Kec. Puncu, Kediri Regency, East Java 64292).

In the implementation of the Bilingual Market Day, there are several stages of the process during the continuity of the activity. Starting with the initial stage carried out, namely giving announcements to students that Bilingual Market Day activities will be held. Criteria  In the implementation of this activity, among others, activities are held per class by dividing groups, one group contains eight to ten people where each group must bring their processed products in the form of snacks and drinks of around three to four kinds. For the food menu, students are required to write in two languages, namely English and Indonesian. At the end, the whole buying and selling transaction each student is required to use two languages, namely English and Indonesian.

Market Day activities are organized as a form of realization and application of strengthening character education in schools. From this activity, there are religious values, independence, and mutual cooperation. From religious values, students are trained to carry out honesty values in the buying and selling process to the results report. The form of independence and mutual cooperation can be seen as shown in Figure 1 above. It can be seen that students are very enthusiastic and students’ freedom is also very visible when preparing stalls, welcoming buyers to choose and sell their merchandise. Selection of food and beverage menus, The selection of food and beverage menus, as well as the concept of marketing and business management, is left entirely to students with direction from their respective homeroom teachers. Students are given the freedom to use the school environment in the form of the front yard of the class as a location to open their business on the Bilingual Market Day activity. From the implementation of the Bilingual Market Day activities, it was found that the concept of the students was considered very good and successful.  The atmosphere of the school yard which is usually quiet during learning hours is transformed into stalls / table stands like in a traditional market and students are very enthusiastic in this activity, so there are several stands that have managed to sell out their products in a short time and get a large enough profit.
