On November 5, 2024, the Department of Indonesian Literature, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang (UM) held a workshop entitled “Strengthening Competence in Writing Fiction” at the AVA Hall, Faculty of Letters. This workshop presented writer Royyan Julian as a resource person, with the aim of providing in-depth insight into the fiction writing process for students who are interested in the world of literature and the creative industry.
This activity was attended by a number of students from various study programs who have a deep interest in writing. In his presentation, Royyan Julian discussed in detail the various stages and important elements in writing fiction, from exploring ideas, building characters, to creating an interesting and realistic plot. He also shared his experiences on the challenges that fiction writers often face, such as finding a strong narrative voice and developing a dynamic plot. According to him, these skills are key to producing works that can capture readers’ attention and compete in the literary and digital content industry.
Royyan also highlighted the development of career opportunities in literature and the creative industry today, especially in the digital era, where the need for original content continues to increase. He motivated the participants to continue honing their writing skills as part of their preparation for the increasingly competitive world of work. According to him, honed writing skills can open up job opportunities not only as writers but also as editors, content creators, and other professions in the creative sector. Strong and relevant literary works are not only entertaining, but can also contribute to the creative economy which is now growing rapidly in Indonesia.
By organizing this workshop, the Department of Indonesian Literature hopes to prepare students as a generation that is creative, competitive, and able to adapt in a dynamic creative industry. This effort is in line with the goal of creating jobs through creativity, where students can explore various independent opportunities and work in the literature and digital content sectors.
Participants gave positive responses to the material presented by Royyan Julian. This workshop is expected to motivate them to seriously develop fiction writing skills as a skill that not only enriches intellectual aspects but also opens up economic opportunities in the real world.
