Workshop on Strengthening Competence in Fiction Writing at State University of Malang: Honing the Writing Talent of the Young Generation

On November 5, 2024, the Department of Indonesian Literature, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang (UM) held a workshop entitled “Strengthening Competence in Writing Fiction” at the AVA Hall, Faculty of Letters. This workshop presented Royyan Julian, a well-known writer, as a guest speaker. This activity aims to improve the ability to write fiction for students, especially for those who are interested and talented in literature and creative writing.
This workshop was attended by dozens of students from various departments at the Faculty of Letters UM who have a great interest in writing fiction. On this occasion, Royyan Julian shared his experiences and important tips in writing fiction stories, from finding ideas, developing characters, to building interesting plots. In addition, he also emphasized the importance of having sensitivity to social and cultural issues in writing fiction, so that the resulting works are not only entertaining but also provide new insights for readers.
This activity also provided a writing practice session, where participants were given the opportunity to directly apply the theory that had been delivered. This session is designed to train writing skills with a more in-depth and interactive approach. With direct guidance from resource persons, students can understand the technical aspects of fiction writing while exploring their potential as writers capable of producing quality works.
This workshop not only aims to improve technical skills in writing fiction, but also to inspire the younger generation to create literary works that are relevant to the issues that are developing in society. This effort is in line with the commitment of the Faculty of Letters UM to support the development of quality education, by providing space and opportunities for students to develop creative and critical thinking skills. Through activities like this, students are invited not only to see writing as a skill, but also as a way to convey ideas and views that are useful for society.
The participants responded positively to the workshop, and many of them felt motivated to develop their interest in fiction writing more seriously. This workshop is expected to be the first step for the younger generation to explore their potential in the world of literature, so that they can produce works that are able to inspire and inspire the wider community.
