SDG 11. Sustainable Cities & Communities (11.2.6 Record and preserve cultural heritage)

This research activity focuses on mapping traditional skills and skills in Malang Raya, which is part of the intangible cultural heritage. Implemented by lecturers at the State University of Malang from the Faculty of Letters and the Faculty of Social Sciences, this activity targets centers and home industries, artisans, and traditional crafts spread across Malang City, Malang Regency, and Batu City, East Java, Indonesia. Swastika Dhesti Anggriani, S.Sn., MA and M. Nurwiseso Wibisono, S.Kom., MT Department of Art and Design, Faculty of Letters, and Ifan Deffinika S.Si., M.Sc. and the Department of Geography, Faculty of Social Sciences, carried out this research to map out traditional crafts and skills found in Greater Malang for further scientific publication to the public through mass media publications and national/international seminars. This publication is carried out with the hope that traditional crafts and skills in Malang Raya can be recognized nationally and internationally as part of the intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia.

This research activity begins with initial observations to discover whether in Malang Raya there are still traditional crafts and skills that continue to be developed today. Then, the initial data is reduced to the criteria of the exact cultural heritage requirements that can be recognized and then used as a reference for collecting data to be analyzed. Data collection activities included field observations (coming directly to centers and home industries), interviews with owners and artisans, and searching for library data from journals and proceedings articles and related books. Furthermore, the data will be analyzed to obtain a description of the intangible cultural heritage of each traditional craft and skill consisting of 1) batok kelapa craft, 2) kapal kayu nelayan craft, 3) keramik dinoyo craft, 4) keris craft, 5) payung kertas craft, 6) rattan craft, 7) cobek batu craft, dan 8) topeng malang craft.
