rom May 27 to September 2024, students of the Department of Indonesian Literature, State University of Malang, had the opportunity to participate in an internship program at the Language Development and Guidance Agency. This internship is part of the effort to update and enrich the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI) by adding 200 thousand new entries, which aims to enhance and follow the development of the Indonesian language more broadly and deeply.

This internship is also an essential collaboration between universities in East Java, especially the State University of Malang, and the Language Development and Guidance Agency. This collaboration strengthens the relationship between educational institutions and government agencies and contributes to scientific development and empowerment of human resources in language and literature.

During the internship, students are involved in various in-depth and valuable activities. They conducted intensive research to collect the latest relevant data from various sources, such as the latest literature, mass media, and other related sources. In addition, they also conducted interviews with linguists and cultural experts to gain a more in-depth perspective on the use of words and phrases in everyday and specialized language contexts.

Under the direct guidance of a team of experts at the Language Development Agency, students learn modern lexicography methodology and the latest techniques in dictionary updating. They write clear and precise definitions and verify the accuracy of new entries in accordance with applicable spelling and grammar rules.

In addition to the core activities, the internship provides a forum for discussion, exchange of ideas, and Q&A sessions between students and experts. This deepened their understanding of Indonesian language structure and broadened their horizons on the importance of language preservation and development as an integral part of national identity and culture.

This internship not only develops students’ professional competencies but also significantly contributes to national efforts to maintain the diversity of the Indonesian language and make it a more effective and inclusive means of communication. With collaboration between universities and the Language Development and Guidance Agency, it is hoped that the KBBI can continue to experience developments by the dynamics of language development and the needs of modern society.
