Chinese Language Training for Employees of PT World Innovative Telecommunication in East Java

The importance of mastering Chinese for employees who work in foreign companies, especially Chinese companies, underlies the State University of Malang (UM) to increase Chinese competence. Through the Chinese Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Letters (FS) UM, employees of PT. World Innovative Telecommunication participates in online Chinese language training.

The ability to speak foreign languages ​​is one of the requirements for applying for jobs in national and multinational companies, including foreign companies such as PT. World Innovative Telecommunication. PT. World Innovative Telecommunication is the company that oversees the OPPO smartphone company in Indonesia.

This company is a large-scale production company in Indonesia. For the Surabaya branch itself, PT. World Innovative Telecommunication has 1300 employees. Of the 1300 existing employees, the percentage of employees who can speak foreign languages, especially Chinese, is less than 50 percent. There are better conditions than this, considering that this company is a company originating from China.

Communication barriers due to language limitations between leaders and employees are often significant obstacles in their work. This situation ultimately results in a decrease in employee performance. If the employee is fluent in Chinese, then communication problems will help employment. The lack of mastery of foreign languages, especially Chinese for employees in Chinese companies is considered to be one of the problems that must be immediately resolved. If this problem is not resolved, it will further have the potential to cause losses for the company.

The Chinese language training held by the Chinese Education Study Program, State University of Malang for employees, is stored online every Thursday, from July 22 2021, to August 26, 2021. A total of 60 participants from various branches of PT. World Innovative Telecommunication in East Java participated in this training. The training is held online using the Zoom Meeting application by utilizing the breakout room feature as a substitute for the classroom. The Chinese class is divided into three categories with 20 participants each. The lecturers in this training are not only lecturers of the Chinese language education study program but also teachers from China directly. The total number of teachers in this training is six people.

The training materials for improving Chinese language skills for employees cover four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Regional General Manager of OPPO Surabaya Out City, Khairur Rozi said this training was a golden opportunity for company employees. Furthermore, Khairur hopes that this training will have an impact on improving employee performance in completing work.
