On July 25, 2024, Dr. Muchammad Bayu Tejo Sampurno delivered a presentation at the AVA D18 Building regarding the challenges and opportunities for implementing Augmented Reality (AR) in arts education in Indonesia. In this discussion, Dr. Muchammad Bayu Tejo Sampurno discussed in depth the various obstacles faced in implementing AR in Indonesian schools as well as the potential that can be developed to advance arts education in the country. This article summarizes his presentation regarding the main issues and opportunities that exist in the application of AR technology in the arts education sector.
One of the main challenges faced in implementing AR in Indonesian schools is limited infrastructure and access to technology. Many schools, especially in remote or less developed areas, face shortages of necessary hardware such as smartphones, tablets or AR headsets. Limited stable internet access also hinders schools’ ability to access AR applications and content effectively.
Implementing AR in arts education requires specific technical skills, both from teachers and students. Many educators do not have adequate knowledge and training about AR technology. The lack of professional training and technical support causes difficulties in exploiting the full potential of AR in the arts teaching and learning process. The costs associated with procuring AR devices and developing AR content are also significant obstacles. The initial investment in hardware and software, as well as the costs of developing and maintaining AR content, can be a burden for many schools. Limited funding often prevents schools from widely adopting new technologies.
The integration of AR into the arts education curriculum requires adaptation and development of appropriate teaching materials. Existing curricula often have not been designed to incorporate AR technology effectively. Adapting curricula and creating AR-relevant learning materials requires additional time and effort from educators and content developers. Despite the challenges, AR offers great opportunities to improve the quality of arts teaching and learning. With AR, students can interact with works of art in a more dynamic and immersive way, gaining access to additional information about technique, context, and the creative process. A more interactive learning experience can increase student engagement and deeper understanding of the material.
The application of AR in arts education provides opportunities for innovation in the curriculum. With AR, the curriculum can be updated to include new techniques and creative approaches relevant to the latest technological developments. AR integration can enrich teaching materials and provide new ways to explore and understand art. AR facilitates collaboration between students in innovative ways. This technology allows students to work together on art projects involving digital and physical elements, even though they are in different locations. This collaboration can expand the boundaries of creativity and provide a more diverse learning experience.
There are opportunities to develop AR content specific to the local Indonesian context, such as traditional arts and local culture. AR content designed to highlight the richness of local culture and art can enrich arts learning and give students deeper insight into their cultural heritage. Governments, educational institutions and the private sector can work together to overcome challenges and take advantage of existing opportunities. Joint initiatives, such as training programs for educators, subsidies for technology devices, and AR content development, can help accelerate the adoption of this technology in Indonesian schools.
In his presentation at the AVA D18 Building, Dr. Muchammad Bayu Tejo Sampurno emphasized that the implementation of Augmented Reality in arts education in Indonesia faces various challenges, including limited infrastructure, costs and lack of training. However, these technologies also offer significant opportunities to improve the quality of teaching, encourage curriculum innovation, and enrich the student learning experience. With the right support and joint efforts, AR can be an effective tool in advancing arts education in Indonesia and opening the door to creative development in the future.
