Welcome Speech from the Head of Visual Communication Design Program: Reducing Inequality through Inclusive Design (SDG 10)

head of the Visual Communication Design (DKV) Program at Universitas Negeri Malang delivered a welcoming speech to the new cohort of students, focusing on the role of design in addressing inequality. The speech centered on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 10: “Reduced Inequalities,” which aims to eliminate disparities based on income, gender, race, ethnicity, and other social factors.

In the speech, the program head emphasized that visual communication design can be a powerful force for social change. “As designers, you have the opportunity to create messages that reach diverse audiences, challenge stereotypes, and promote inclusion. It is your responsibility to ensure that your work reflects fairness, equality, and respect for all,” they said

.

The speech also encouraged students to use their design skills to create work that resonates with underrepresented communities and addresses social imbalances. “Inclusive design is not just about aesthetics; it’s about giving a voice to those who are often overlooked in society,” the head added.

By the end of the speech, students were motivated to approach their studies with a sense of purpose, recognizing their potential to reduce inequality through thoughtful, impactful design that reflects the values of fairness and inclusivity.
