On the fourth day of the “Holiday Program: Learning World Languages” on July 4, 2024, the primary focus was on introducing American culture, specifically the Kentucky region. The day was designed to enhance participants’ speaking skills and cultural understanding through a series of engaging and interactive activities.

The day began with an introduction to the Kentucky region and its culture. Participants were provided with information about the area’s history, traditions, and unique aspects, such as bluegrass music and the famous horse derbies. Following this, participants were asked to share their favorite things about Indonesia. They presented what they liked, such as food, tourist spots, or Indonesian culture. This activity helped participants practice their speaking skills and fostered a sense of pride in their local culture.

Next, the discussion introduced American culture, including values like individualism, freedom, opportunity, family, and unity in diversity. Participants were encouraged to discuss and compare these values with their own culture, which helped broaden their perspectives and understanding of cultural differences.

After that, participants delved into the world of popular American foods and their ingredients. This discussion provided valuable insights into various types of food that are popular in America and how they are made. Participants then explored the most popular sports in Indonesia, such as soccer and badminton. This was followed by watching several videos of American sports like football and baseball, introducing them to sports they might not be familiar with.

The day concluded with a discussion about future aspirations. Participants paired up or formed small groups to share their dreams and aspirations. This activity helped them practice their speaking skills and encouraged them to think about their future and how they might achieve their goals.

Overall, the activities on the fourth day provided a deeper understanding of American and Indonesian culture and developed participants’ communication and presentation skills through various interactive activities. By engaging in discussions about culture, food, sports, and future aspirations, participants not only learned English but also broadened their knowledge of the world, leaving them with a sense of pride in their achievements.
