The “Harmony of Traditions: Celebrating Diversity through Traditional Musical Instruments” activity at Malang State University is not just a celebration of traditional music, but also an effort to promote inclusiveness and cultural diversity in the campus environment as part of a sustainable community. On April 29 2024, students of the Dance and Music Education Study Program from the Faculty of Letters, together with university staff and visitors, will be treated to a live performance of traditional musical instruments around the Veteran’s Gate. This performance aims to unite various cultural elements on campus, creating an inclusive public space for all members of the university community. By studying and playing traditional music, students not only enrich themselves but also strengthen the campus’ cultural identity.

This activity encourages appreciation of local cultural heritage and builds a sense of togetherness among students from diverse backgrounds. Concretely, this activity supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 11, namely building cities and communities that are inclusive, safe, disaster-resistant and sustainable. In the midst of globalization and modernization, maintaining and promoting cultural diversity is crucial for building harmonious relationships in society.

Malang State University as an educational center has an important role in instilling these values in the younger generation, so that they can become agents of positive change in building a more inclusive and sustainable society. Through “Harmony of Traditions”, we not only celebrate cultural richness, but also invite all parties to reflect on how diversity can be a force that unites, not divides. This activity is the first step in building collective awareness of the importance of cultural inclusivity in strengthening the foundations of a sustainable community on campus and beyond.
