GERAKAN LITERASI SEKOLAH (GLS) TO DEVELOP QUALITY OF EDUCATION LITERACIES-BASED AT SDN 4 SIDOLUHUR

The members of this group are Audry Adelia Pramesty, Eve Salsabila Rahmah, Floura Kharisma Putri, Hengki Nur Hudawati, Nafisa Alivia, Rahmawati Arjunaputri, Sarah Filia Ramadhani, and Yuvika Dwi Aprilia. They are students of English Language Education of Universitas Negeri Malang who took the Literacies in ELT course. We carry out this community service activity in the context of the Gerakan Literasi Sekolah (GLS) or literacy school movement to improve the quality of literacy-based education at SD Negeri 4 Sidoluhur, Lawang, Kabupaten Malang. This activity was held from Tuesday, 31 October 2023 to Saturday, 16 December 2023. This program was held in SD Negeri 4 Sidoluhur because we found problems with a lack of teachers, a lack of student’s comprehension of the English language, lagging behind in learning regarding technology, and inadequate facilities. Thus, we carry out this literacy activity not only about reading and writing but also about implementing and developing literacy for both teachers and students at SD Negeri 4 Sidoluhur.

Activities are carried out through observation and interviews with teachers and students first before providing literacy teaching in accordance with the existing problems at SD Negeri 4 Sidoluhur. After going through the pre-teaching stage, we decided to create fun but meaningful teaching to students. First of all, we teach simple vocabulary with self-introduction material in English. Apart from that, we also develop multimodal literacy by showing YouTube videos in English. In this way, students whose background is not taught English in class can learn English through the simple vocabulary that we teach. Also, we saw that there was no library at SD Negeri 4 Sidoluhur, so we decided to raise book donations and fresh money with the poster that we shared on social media. The community is enthusiastic about helping SD Negeri 4 Sidoluhur, so the donations collected can help with the school accommodation. Lastly, we created a literacy sticking board to facilitate teacher learning. Besides, we socialized teachers about literacy activities that can be applied to students using a sticking board as learning media. Activities that can be applied include notes, impressions or messages, and other activities according to the class subjects. We hope that this dedication can be useful for SD Negeri 4 Sidoluhur and become an inspiration for many people.

Picture 1 Watching fable videos

In the picture, the students were watching videos of fables. This modal was chosen to introduce videos as the representation of multimodal literacy. For the first video, the students were asked to watch the video and find the characters and the setting of the scene. After that, we gave the students oral questions about characters and settings then the students answered the questions together orally. Most of the students are not familiar with English, from this activity, the group concluded that the students, in fact, had enough skill in visual literacy. They could understand and retell the story from the video even though most of the students didn’t understand the language used in the video.
