Cultural Preservation Efforts through Extracurricular Batik Painting at Junior High School National Junior High School in Malang

Indonesia’s diverse culture is in danger of fading away due to the influence of globalisation. Therefore, cultural preservation is very important. The purpose of this article is to describe the efforts to preserve Indonesian culture through batik painting extracurricular at SMP Nasional Malang. It is hoped that this effort can have a good impact on the importance of cultural preservation and how batik painting extracurricular  can be an effective solution. 

Batik painting extracurricular is an additional school programme specifically designed to teach students about the art of batik, batik painting techniques, and the cultural values contained therein. In this batik extracurricular activity, students are taught about the types of batik, various decorative patterns, how to make batik, and painting batik colouring techniques. Not only that, in this batik extracurricular activity students are also invited to recognise the values of exemplarity, patience, and creativity that are part of the process of making painted batik works. With the existence of extracurricular batik at SMP Nasional Malang, it aims to introduce and preserve local culture in the form of batik painting to students of SMP Nasional Malang.

This activity has the value of gender equality because in its implementation women and men are accompanied in the same way. Batik extracurricular activities also improve the innovation industry and infrastructure because in this activity students are prepared to have a creative, innovative mindset and contribute to the batik industry in the future. creative, innovative and contribute to the batik industry in the future.

Batik extracurricular activities at SMP Nasional Malang aim to introduce and preserve Indonesian culture to students. Batik, which is the formation of images on cloth using a dipping cover technique using wax or night as a barrier and colouring agent on the fabric (Warsito, 2008: 12).

The existence of extracurricular batik has received a positive response from students because it brings many benefits. The most important benefit is the skills and creativity of students who become more attractive. In addition, awareness of the preservation of Indonesian culture is also higher.

During extracurricular coaching activities, students are taught about the basic theory of batik, drawing stilation techniques, sketching on cloth, dyeing, colouring cloth with painting techniques, and the pelorodan process. There are several things that become an obstacle in its implementation, including batik extracurricular activities which are often delayed due to school holidays or school exams that require batik extracurricular activities to be cancelled. However, these obstacles can be overcome by changing the day and still providing facilities and assistance to students who are still lagging behind. who are still lagging behind.
