Cultural Preservation Efforts Through Batik Painting Extracurricular in Junior High School Malang National

Indonesia’s diverse culture threatens to fade due to the influence of globalization. Therefore, cultural preservation is very important. The purpose of this article is to describe efforts to preserve Indonesian culture through extracurricular batik painting at Malang National Middle School. It is hoped that this effort can have a good impact on the importance of cultural preservation and how extracurricular batik painting can be an effective solution.

The batik painting extracurricular is an additional program at school specifically designed to teach students about the art of batik, painting batik techniques, and the cultural values ​​contained therein. In this batik extracurricular activity, students are taught about the types of batik, various decorative patterns, how to print, to painting batik coloring techniques. Not only that, in this batik extracurricular, students are also invited to recognize the values ​​of exemplary, patience, and creativity which are part of the process of making painted batik works. With the batik extracurricular at Malang National Middle School, it aims to introduce and preserve local culture in the form of painted batik to Malang National Middle School students.

This activity has the value of gender equality because in its implementation women and men are accompanied in the same way. Batik extracurricular activities also improve the innovation and infrastructure industry because in this activity students are prepared to have a creative, innovative mindset and contribute to the future batik industry.

Batik extracurricular at SMP Nasional Malang aims to introduce and preserve Indonesian culture to students. Batik which is the formation of images on cloth by using the dip cover technique by using wax or night as a barrier and dye on the cloth (Warsito, 2008:12).

The existence of this batik extracurricular received a positive response from students because it brought many benefits. The most important benefit is that the skills and creativity of the students are enhanced. In addition, concern for the preservation of Indonesian culture has also become higher.

During extracurricular coaching activities, students are taught the basic theory of batik, drawing stylization techniques, sketches on cloth, cutting, coloring cloth with painting techniques, to the pelorodan process. There are several things that become an obstacle in its implementation, including batik extracurricular activities which are often delayed due to school holidays and there are school exams that require the holiday of activities.

With the existence of batik extracurricular coaching at Malang National Middle School, students who are members can add and improve their skills and creativity in making batik paintings. Students who are members are also familiar with batik both for the tools and materials used to the steps in making painted batik works. Batik extracurricular development at Malang National Middle School will continue to be accompanied by accompanying teachers, who plan to further introduce children to making other batik works.
