On July 11-12, 2024, the Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang, held the International Seminar on Language, Education, and Culture (ISoLEC) 2024. This critical forum brings together academics, practitioners, and students to discuss current language, education, and culture issues. One of the panels that stood out in this event was the presence of students from the Indonesian Literature Department, who specifically focused on gender issues in literary works.

UM Indonesian Literature Department students are dedicated to analyzing and interpreting literary works with a gender lens. They select relevant and in-depth literary works to raise various aspects of gender, such as traditional roles, stereotypes, identity construction, and empowerment. Their discussions not only broadened the understanding of gender dynamics in scholarly contexts but also stimulated critical thinking among seminar participants.

Students present a structured critical analysis of the selected literary works in their presentation sessions. They identify gendered elements in the texts and relate them to the social and historical contexts that inspired the authors. This approach allows the audience to see how literature not only reflects gender realities but can also be a platform to raise awareness and inspire social change.

In addition to formal presentations, students actively participated in interactive discussions with other seminar participants. They exchanged ideas, experiences, and views on how gender can be explored and understood through various literary genres. These discussions transcended academic boundaries and promoted intercultural collaboration in discussing issues relevant to gender diversity.

The faculty and academic community of the UM Indonesian Literature Department fully support students’ participation in ISoLEC 2024. This support covers logistical and administrative aspects and provides moral encouragement and appreciation for students’ intellectual contributions in expanding their insights into the relationship between literature and gender issues.

The presence of UM Indonesian Literature Department students in ISoLEC 2024 is not just participation in academic events but also a manifestation of their commitment to exploring critical issues such as gender through the lens of literature. With analytical presentations and active participation in discussions, they have succeeded in inspiring and educating the audience about the importance of understanding the role of gender in literary works as a reflection of society and a potential source of social change.
