On January 12, 2024, Visual Communication Design (DKV) students at Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) held a unique final exam themed “Creativity for Sustainable Cities.” This exam not only focused on academic assessment but also on how design can contribute to creating more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable urban environments.
DKV UM students were challenged to create design works that promote concepts such as inclusive public spaces, eco-friendly transportation, affordable housing, and urban waste management. This exam encouraged students to think critically about urban issues and find creative solutions that can be applied both locally and globally.
Students were given the freedom to choose the media they found most effective in conveying their message, ranging from posters, animated videos, installations, to product designs. They were also encouraged to consider social, economic, and environmental aspects in their works. The result was a variety of projects that not only showcased technical and artistic skills but also a deep understanding of the importance of sustainability in urban environments.
Some of the displayed works included posters depicting the importance of green spaces in cities, animations showing sustainable transportation solutions, and installations visualizing energy-efficient vertical housing concepts. Each work was accompanied by a detailed explanation of the issues addressed and how the design could help solve these problems.
Overall, this unique final exam affirmed Universitas Negeri Malang’s commitment to holistic education that is relevant to current challenges. This activity supports efforts to build better cities and communities in the future by providing a platform for students to explore and develop innovative ideas that can contribute to better and more sustainable urban development.
