On February 23, 2024, the Faculty of Letters witnessed a remarkable event showcasing its academic community’s unity and diversity. The Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Letters (BEM Fakultas Sastra) organized an event called Sastra Jamming, or SASJAM, to foster camaraderie among the five departmental organizations within the faculty. This unique gathering not only highlighted the distinctive characteristics of each department but also featured impressive performances that enthralled the audience.
A Celebration of Diversity and Unity
SASJAM was designed to be a platform where the departments within the Faculty of Letters could unite and celebrate their unique identities while reinforcing a sense of unity. The Faculty of Letters has five departments, each with its own focus and specialization. These departments include the Department of Indonesian Literature, Department of English Literature, Department of Japanese Literature, Department of Arabic Literature, and Department of Regional Literature.
Each department took the stage to deliver performances emblematic of their respective fields. The Department of Indonesian Literature captivated the audience with a dramatic reading of classic Indonesian poetry, reflecting Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage and literary traditions. On the other hand, the Department of English Literature showcased a modern twist by performing a contemporary theatrical piece that explored themes of identity and belonging.
The Department of Japanese Literature brought a touch of the East with a traditional Noh theater performance, complete with intricate costumes and mesmerizing storytelling. Meanwhile, the Department of Arabic Literature fascinated the audience with a poetic recitation in Arabic, highlighting the beauty and rhythm of the Arabic language. The Department of Regional Literature concluded the departmental performances with a vibrant display of local folklore through a traditional dance that celebrated the diverse cultures within the region.
Beyond Departmental Showcases: A Night of Stellar Performances
While the departmental showcases were a highlight of the event, SASJAM also featured a range of other performances that added to the excitement of the evening. A local band took to the stage, delivering a high-energy musical performance that got the audience on their feet. A group of students from various departments presented a collaborative dance performance, symbolizing the unity and harmony that SASJAM aimed to promote.
A spoken word poetry session allowed students to express their thoughts and feelings on various topics, from personal experiences to social issues, providing a platform for creative expression and dialogue. The night also included a short film screening created by students from the Faculty of Letters, which delved into the intricacies of human relationships and the power of communication.
The Venue: A Symbol of Student Collaboration
The event took place at the Ormawa Sastra Secretariat Building, a venue that holds significant meaning for the students of the Faculty of Letters. The building, often used for various student activities and organizational meetings, symbolizes students’ collaborative spirit and active involvement in shaping their academic and social environments. The choice of this venue for SASJAM was a testament to the importance of student-led initiatives and their role in fostering a vibrant and inclusive community.
A Success Worth Celebrating
SASJAM was more than just an event; it celebrated the Faculty of Letters’ rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and literary traditions. It succeeded in bringing together students from different backgrounds and disciplines, allowing them to appreciate and learn from each other’s strengths. The event also provided a platform for students to showcase their talents and creativity, fostering a sense of pride and belonging within the faculty.
The success of SASJAM can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of the BEM Fakultas Sastra and the enthusiastic participation of the students. It set a precedent for future events, highlighting the importance of unity and collaboration in achieving collective goals.
In conclusion, Sastra Jamming was a resounding success, reinforcing the bonds among the departments within the Faculty of Letters and providing a memorable experience for all who attended. It was a night of artistic expression, cultural celebration, and a testament to the power of coming together as a community.
